Viewing Design In Terms Of VERBS.

Most of the time when we mention the word “design” it is received as a concept of making something aesthetically attractive. Every time we think of a design, we think about something good looking. Why does this happen?

It so happens that most of the time, we look at things as nouns. A beautiful home designed by an architect. A beautiful packaging of a cosmetic brand. A beautiful looking dress made by a fashion brand. 

On the contrary, it helps to think about design in terms of verbs. Once we do this, the whole perspective shifts. I have been heavily interested in how things work and how they help people achieve their goals. When we start thinking about design in terms of verbs, we understand a deeper workings of design and the value it creates in the lives of people. A simple hammer designed with the right choice of metal for the head combined with right material and length of the handle makes the work of the person engaged in pushing a nail in the wood or wall easier. If more use cases with respect to hammer are thought of, one may design one side of the head of the hammer as a crowbar. With this decision, the decisions on the handles may be looked at again. The intentional design choices while thinking in terms of verbs and activities people do to achieve their goals in certain contexts makes the study of design interesting. Design is a process of putting together disparate objects and ideas together so that the final outcome is greater that the sum of the parts. 

This perspective of looking at design in terms of verbs has a larger impact on creating solutions that affect lives of people in a positive way.
